What is Heat Shift?

The Heat Shift system automatically uses warmth from your wood stove, pellet stove, a south-facing bay of windows, or any other heat source to warm your entire home. Heat Shift pulls hot air from the room with your heat source and circulates it throughout your house—turning OFF your primary heating system (furnace, boiler, heat pump, or electric heat) when using that heat source is more efficient. This keeps you warm during the cold winter months while saving you money on your heating bills.

Works with: Wood stoves, pellet stoves, fireplaces, south-facing bays of windows & sunrooms, mini-splits, workshop heaters, or any other heat source

Compatible with: Oil furnaces, propane furnaces, natural gas furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, and electric heating systems

How Does Heat Shift Work?

For homes with existing forced-air duct systems

Before Heat Shift Installation

Diagram: Pre-Retrofit

Your home has a heating system—furnace, boiler, heat pump, or electric heat—that warms your living space. You might also have a wood stove, pellet stove, or other heat source warming one room. That warmth stays in that room and doesn't help heat the rest of your house.

The problem: You're burning oil, propane, natural gas, or electricity to heat your whole home while free (or low-cost) heat from your wood stove goes to waste.

What Heat Shift Adds to Your System

Diagram: What We Add

Heat Shift adds three simple components to your existing HVAC system:

1. Heat Shift Smart Control Unit – Monitors temperatures in your source room and controls your system automatically
2. Return duct from your heat source room – Captures warm air from the room where your wood stove, pellet stove, or other heat source is located
3. Smart dampers – Work with your thermostat to direct airflow—using your heat source when it's hot, or your primary heating system when it's not

Installation takes about 5 hours. We work with your existing ductwork and HVAC system—no major renovations required.

How Heat Shift Works: Active & Passive Phases

Diagram: How It Works

Active Phase (When Your Heat Source is Hot)

Heat Shift works seamlessly with your thermostat. Whenever your thermostat calls for heat, Heat Shift monitors the temperature in your source room. When it's above your activation temperature (typically 80-85°F), Heat Shift:

1. Opens the damper on the return duct from your source room
2. Closes the damper on your standard return duct
3. Turns OFF your primary heating system (no fuel consumed!)
4. Runs your air handler to circulate hot air from your source room throughout your home

Result: You're heating your whole home with your wood stove, pellet stove, or other heat source—not burning oil or propane. You use your thermostat exactly as you always have.

Passive Phase (When Your Heat Source is Cool)

When your source room temperature drops below the activation temperature, Heat Shift:

1. Closes the damper on the source room return duct
2. Opens the damper on your standard return duct
3. Turns ON your primary heating system to maintain comfort
4. Operates normally until your source room heats up again

Result: You stay warm and comfortable—Heat Shift automatically switches to your primary heating system only when your heat source isn't available. Again, you just use your thermostat like always.

What Heat Sources Work With Heat Shift?

Wood Stoves & Pellet Stoves

The most common use case. If you heat one room with wood or pellets, Heat Shift distributes that warmth throughout your entire home automatically.

South-Facing Bays of Windows & Sunrooms

Does your south-facing bay of windows or sunroom get really warm on sunny winter days? That's passive solar heat—and it's essentially free. Heat Shift captures that warmth and circulates it to the rest of your home.

Fireplaces with Blowers

If you have a fireplace that warms a room, Heat Shift can distribute that heat throughout your house instead of letting it stay in one space.

Mini-Splits Used for Heating

If you have a mini-split heat pump efficiently heating one room, Heat Shift can distribute that warmth to other rooms through your existing ducts.

Workshop Heaters, Attached Garages, or Any Other Heat Source

If it warms a room, Heat Shift can use it to heat your whole home.

The key: Heat Shift works with virtually any heat source. As long as a room gets warm, Heat Shift can pull that heat and circulate it.

Perfect for Heating Additions & Renovations

Need to heat a new addition without expensive modifications?

Instead of extending your existing heating system through finished spaces (often $5,000-$10,000+), Heat Shift can pull warm air from your existing heated space and deliver it to your addition whenever the addition's thermostat calls for heat.

  • No need for a separate mini-split system
  • More efficient than electric baseboard heaters

Heat Shift gives you professional whole-home heating without the whole-home installation cost.

See Your Estimated Savings in Real Time

The Heat Shift control unit displays your estimated savings right on the screen:

Current Temp: 78.5
Smart Shift: 82.5

Estimated Savings:
$4,850 / 118.4 gal.

How it works: Heat Shift estimates your fuel savings based on how much time your primary heating system would have been running, your nozzle size, and your current fuel cost. The display gives you visibility into your estimated savings over time.

Why this matters: Heating and cooling account for nearly 50% of energy use in most homes. Heat Shift targets this massive expense by using your heat source whenever it's more efficient to do so.

Can I Have Both Cool Down AND Heat Shift?

Yes! Homeowners can install both systems for year-round energy savings:

  • Cool Down for summer → Uses basement cooling to reduce AC costs
  • Heat Shift for winter → Uses wood stove/pellet stove/other heat source to reduce heating costs

The systems work independently and complement each other perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Heat Shift work?

Heat Shift works with your existing thermostat and automatically chooses the most efficient heat source. When your thermostat calls for heat, Heat Shift monitors the temperature in the room with your heat source (wood stove, pellet stove, south-facing windows, etc.). When that room is hot enough (above your activation temperature), Heat Shift pulls warm air from that room and circulates it throughout your home while turning OFF your primary heating system (furnace, boiler, heat pump, etc.). When the room cools down, Heat Shift switches back to your primary heating system to keep you comfortable. You use your thermostat exactly as you always have—Heat Shift works in the background to reduce your energy costs.

Will I stay comfortable?

Absolutely. Heat Shift automatically switches back to your primary heating system whenever your heat source isn't warm enough. You set your thermostat like always—Heat Shift just uses the most efficient heat source available to reduce your energy costs. You'll never wake up cold.

What if my heat source goes out overnight?

No problem. Heat Shift detects when your source room cools down and seamlessly switches to your primary heating system. The transition is automatic and you won't notice it.

Do I need existing ductwork?

For whole-home heating, Heat Shift is most easily installed with forced-air systems. However, we can install standalone duct ssytems with inline blowers even if your home doesn't have existing ductwork.

How much can I really save?

It depends on how consistently you use your heat source. Homeowners who run their wood or pellet stoves daily can see significant reductions in fuel consumption—often 50-70% or more. Heat Shift displays your estimated savings in real-time on the control unit based on runtime and fuel cost.

Does Heat Shift work if I don't have a wood stove or pellet stove?

Yes! Heat Shift can work with any heat source—a large bay of south-facing windows, a mini-split, a fireplace, or even heat from an attached workshop area. If it warms a room, Heat Shift can use it.

Does this void my heating system warranty?

No. Heat Shift connects to the standard control wiring on your heating system—the same connections your thermostat uses. It's a completely non-invasive installation that doesn't modify your furnace, boiler, or heat pump internals.

What about homes with boilers and radiators?

Heat Shift works! We either use your existing air handler (if you have AC ducts) or install a dedicated duct run and inline blower for heating. Both options work great.

Can I install Heat Shift myself?

Yes, if you're comfortable with HVAC work. Installation requires running one additional return duct from your heat source room, installing dampers, and wiring low-voltage controls. We provide detailed installation videos and instructions. Many DIYers successfully install Heat Shift, and we're available to answer questions. We recommend professional installation whenever possible for the best results and warranty coverage.

How long does installation take?

Professional installation takes about 5 hours for most homes. DIY installation typically takes a full day, depending on your experience level and the complexity of your ductwork.

What's the activation temperature and how do I set it?

The activation temperature is the temperature at which Heat Shift toggles between using your heat source and using your primary heating system. Start with 80°F and adjust based on your comfort over the first few weeks. Higher = more consistent heat but lower savings. Lower = higher savings but slightly less consistent heat. Heat Shift uses a 2-degree margin around this temperature to prevent excessive switching between active and passive phases. Most customers will find their perfect activation temperature setting within a week or two of use.

Does Heat Shift work with electric heat or heat pumps?

Yes! Heat Shift works with oil, propane, natural gas, electric heat, and heat pumps. The control unit meters your savings based on your fuel type.
